A year ago I traveled with Global Finance charity partner Amrit Davaa’s team of doctors and medical staff to the Manjushree Orphanage in Tawang, a small town in a remote corner of North East India. Our mission, aided by substantial funding from Global Finance itself, was to deliver desperately needed healthcare and medical supplies to the 130 children at the orphanage and to provide a treatment facility to serve the 40,000 people living in the region surrounding Tawang.
The mission was a huge success. Not only did the team of doctors treat many hundreds of people, we also laid the groundwork for the establishment of a permanent, sustainable medical facility at the orphanage that will significantly improve healthcare standards in this economically deprived region.
Since our return last December, Amrit Davaa has been working tirelessly to build on the successes of the first mission. Two more teams of doctors have since visited the orphanage, providing follow-up care and now, with help from Architects Without Borders, Amrit Davaa is starting work on the construction of a purpose-designed 7,000 square foot infirmary and clinic at Manjushree. Construction of the healthcare facility will cost a total of $210,000 and Amrit Davaa is funding the project with an innovative donation scheme. Donors are invited to “buy” one or more square foot of the new facility for a donation of $30 per square foot. All donors will have their name placed on a wall plaque in the medical building. The names of those who sponsor a room will be placed on the clinic/infirmary door–although donations can be anonymous if preferred.
