Padmaja celebrated her XX birthday today. Being a Monday rather restricted our options. In fact there was only one. Celebrate as best we can at home. In fact I run our weekly management meeting on Mondays and normally return home only about 10.30 pm. I let Padmaja believe that today would be no exception.
The second problem was dietary. Mondays are strictly vegetarian. No exceptions. Mondays are dedicated to Lord Shiv and Padmaja is an ardent devotee.
This second item raised the rather nasty question of eggless cakes. Being carnivorous by nature I have never purchased such a thing as an eggless cake and had no idea of how to procure one. Some asking around at work resulted in the information that such abominations are rather common though no less expensive than cakes with eggs in them.
Well to cut a long story short, i called a couple of bakeries and nearly fell off the chair when told the cost of cake. My current favorite, Ma Iyenger, in Madhapur turned out to be reasonably priced. Well after the Rs. 360/- per kg I heard from the other bakers, the price of Rs. 240/- from Ma Iyenger seemed reasonable though the last time I bought a cake (a few years ago) I paid Rs. 140/- per kg.
I asked for the cake to be ready for pickup at 5.00 pm though I would be able to pick it up no earlier than 6.00 pm. Such stretches are second nature to most Indians who are used to dealing with an antiquated civil service.
I picked up the cake at 6 pm and managed to reach home shortly after Padmaja. She was surprised to see me. And I think she liked the cake.
Mamli and Bablu made a cake at home. Or rather Mamli did after returning from school at 4.00 pm. And it tasted good.
