April 13, 2009, Day 3 – Kolkata:

Falakunama Express arrived on time at Howrah. My uncle’s driver, Mandal-da, was there to pick us up and we drove actoss the old Howrah bridge to Park Street where my uncle and aunt have a flat.

I had saved my previous two emailed posts as I was getting an intermittent signal in the train near Kharagpur, my old college. At my uncle’s flat. I tried connecting and received a rude shock. GPRS no longer worked! That is when I realised that what I had taken for dropped connections on the train was actually the loss of GPRS when I entered West Bengal.

I spent a frantic hour trying to figure out what was wrong. My aunt didn’t have a BSNL directory and I went looking for a PCO who might be able to at least give me the local BSNL Call Center number. I did get the number but I somehow kept getting the Karnataka call center instead of Bengal. Finally gave up in disgust and went for a shower morosely contemplating a week without internet access. Till we crossed back in to Odissa again.

After my shower I found that GPRS service had been restored! Well, I am not complaining!

I am not sure what will happen when we cross over from West Bengal in to Sikim tomorrow morning but I am keeping my fingers crossed. If that happens I will continue to post but they wull appear in a rush when I get my connection back in Odissa.

What do I give my daughter, my first born, on the day she turns 10? Double digits!

I want it to be something special, something that she will use and remember. Not just another gizmo, toy or dress. Not something to use and discard. I want something of lasting value, something to delight her and instruct her. Something that will set her apart. Something that will teach her life skills.

One of the things I am considering is a savings bank account. ICICI has what it calls “Young Star Savings Account” which comes with Debit Card, personalized cheque book, Internet Banking, limits on daily withdrawal and spends etc.

I would transfer a fixed sum of money into this account every month and she would operate it. Pay her schools fees out of it using her own cheques. Withdraw money from the ATM for her own use. Use some of the money to buy investment instruments like NSC, Fixed Deposits or even mutual funds. She already has her own PPF account and maybe she can deposit into that out of this account too.

Essentially introduce her to the concept of money and how to manage it.

What do you think?

The other gift idea is her own mobile phone. Something she has been hinting at for some time

I was surprised to see FeedDemon showing Hindi text for L. I remembered that the blog was in English when I had first seen it and posted about it here.

It seems he has switched to Hindi. A bad choice to say the least. English is the lingua franca of the web and there are a very large number of netizens like I who are uncomfortable with or illiterate in Hindi. Mr. Advavi has just lost a reader.

I also noticed that none of his Hindi language posts have any comments. All of his English language posts have comments, large numbers of them.

Sad.

Mr. Advani, if you wish to write in Hindi by all means do so. However you must ensure that there is an English language version for people like I who admire what you stand for and what you are trying to do for this country. I wish to read what you have to say. Don’t shut the door in my face.
