Happy Birthday dearest daughter! Now you are officially in the teens I wish you the best of luck and hope that you will see many more such days, filled with joy and love. I hope you enjoyed the cake made my mummy this morning. She woke up earlier than usual to get everything ready.

Birthday Card for Padmaja, by Mamli & Bablu

Mamli, our 10 year old daughter & Bablu our 5 year old son made a birthday card for Mummy today. I am not sure when they made it but most probably they worked on it after school today. Anyway they made the whole thing themselves, artwork and text. On a piece of A4 printer paper. I will let the card speak for itself.

Mamli & Bablu's Birthday Party – March 22, 2009

Mamli & Bablu celebrated their 10th and 5th birthdays respectively with a small party at home. And this is the first time they didn’t have home made cakes for their birthday parties. Mamli no longer has girls her age in our apartment complex. All her old friends have moved away, either out of Hyderabad or to other areas in the city. She had a class mate a good friend as her only “friend” in the party. On the other hand Bablu has tons of boys his age. He had a whole horde of squealing boys over. They practically brought the house down

We also had Anu Das, an old friend from Rourkela, visit us today. Anu arrived before lunch and stayed till the end of the party.

Birthday Gift For A Daughter Turning 10?

What do I give my daughter, my first born, on the day she turns 10? Double digits!

I want it to be something special, something that she will use and remember. Not just another gizmo, toy or dress. Not something to use and discard. I want something of lasting value, something to delight her and instruct her. Something that will set her apart. Something that will teach her life skills.

One of the things I am considering is a savings bank account. ICICI has what it calls “Young Star Savings Account” which comes with Debit Card, personalized cheque book, Internet Banking, limits on daily withdrawal and spends etc.

I would transfer a fixed sum of money into this account every month and she would operate it. Pay her schools fees out of it using her own cheques. Withdraw money from the ATM for her own use. Use some of the money to buy investment instruments like NSC, Fixed Deposits or even mutual funds. She already has her own PPF account and maybe she can deposit into that out of this account too.

Essentially introduce her to the concept of money and how to manage it.

What do you think?

The other gift idea is her own mobile phone. Something she has been hinting at for some time

Mamli's 9th Birthday Party

Mamli turned 9 yesterday, March 8, 2008. I still have difficulty absorbing the fact that my little baby is growing up so fast.

She had a small birthday party for her closest friends in our apartment in Hyderabad. She helped Padmaja make the cake and do the icing.

Bablu our almost-4-year-old son was perhaps even more excited than Mamli. Bablu will celebrate his 4th Birthday on March 21, 2008. Incidentally it is Holi that day and we expect to have our hands full with the festival as well as the little tyke’s birthday party.

Mamli cut her cake at about 7.00 p.m., after all her friends had arrived. The kids loved the cake and the Chatt Padmaja had made.

They played a game of stick-the-bindi-on-my-face-while-blind-folded. Padmaja later told me that she had played a similar game 25 years ago at a friend’s birthday party when she was Mamli’s age.

Tomorrow, Monday, is Birthday-at-school day. No uniform, candy for her friends and teachers, and a shinny new pink colored school bag. She does so love pink!
